Kat Jones is a 24 year old alternative folk-rock artist from Fresno, California. She has been singing most of her life but didn't see the start of her music career until 1996 when she started interning with producer Peter Wolf at Wolf Sound Audio Engineering. Upon spending most of her senior year in High School with bands in a recording studio she developed a good ear for songs and a realization that her life was heading in the direction of becoming a singer/ songwriter.
Kat performed for the first time in 1997, rounding off her senior year, playing the first song she had written, 2 nights in a row, in front of audiences of 500 people. Her career, since then, has been filled with personal achievements. She has previously worked in the bands Sapphire Rain, Mania, was the original singer for Atari Champ, and is currently working towards gaining a backing band to support her as a singer/ songwriter.
She has recently returned from a year in Edinburgh, Scotland where she lived, and worked with a missions organization focused on the performing arts. There she got the opportunity to play every week at an open mic night in a pub. She was presented with the chance to hone her skills there and really experiment with her live performances. Whilst playing the open mic nights Kat garnered a lot of attention for her ability to write songs, sing, and became a part of the family of musicians who performed there every week. Because of that year out Kat Jones music career has been changed forever.
Before leaving however, she spent some time in the studio recording a three song demo. The demo includes the songs "Song For Edward," a song actually written about someone she's never met before; "Lullaby," a song written for her nieces and nephews; and "As the Clouds Pass Swiftly By", a song a song that deals with emotional turmoil and coming into the peace God brings.
"Song For Edward" was included on Velvet Blue Music's "Burning Ears;" an independent artist compilation released in 2000. As well, it spent some time at number one on the indie music charts on Mp3.com. All three songs on the demo spent time on the top 20 of that chart- "Song For Edward" and "As The Clouds Pass Swiftly By" both making it to the top 5 on the Indie charts. Making her the most the most downloaded Mp3.com artist in the Fresno area for some weeks.
Upon returning to the states she played her first show within a month and a half of arriving and recorded it. 5 of the recorded songs and the three song demo were combined in the form of an e.p. called The Glory Green, which was released in March of 2002.
Kat's most recent release is in the form of a 3 song single released by Velvet Blue Music entitled "Building." Kat had the joy of working with producers Frank Lenz (Fold Zandura, Richard Swift, Charity Empressa) and Jeff Cloud (owner of VBM, Starflyer 59) on this project and hopes to work with them again in the near future. The release contains the fully orchestrated versions of The Great Scottish Hurricane (a song written after a 3 month struggle with depression in Scotland), Huntington (penned on the spot whilst she was recording with Lenz in Huntington Beach), and Sleeping Winter Fool (written about trying to pull friends out of harmful situations). The three songs take on a distincly Americana sound whilst bringing some punk rock into the mix. This single was released in December 2002 and is available at:

As a result of Kat's time and experimentation in Scotland, her live performances are gaining acclaim, and she is more sure of who she is as an artist. She has to a radio station in Spain (80 FM) which features a wide range of music- Varying from jazz to alternative, has been included on a Fresno band compilation which will be circulated to college radio stations around the U.S. and is beginning to gain attention from various record labels around the country.
Her desires for the music are that people will be moved to a place of peace, self-exploration, and self-realization through hearing the songs and that her experiences will be used to strengthen other musicians to be more thought provoking in their song writing as well as make the right decisions regarding their music careers. | |
