The Radical Thought Resistance
Style(s): Modern Rock, Metal/Hard Rock, Other Location: New York City Label: RTR Manager: Howard Alper Booking: 718-781-9795 Influence(s): Formed in January 2000 by guitarist Aki Ishibashi and drummer Howard Alper, The Radical Thought Resistance or simply “RTR” forges a fresh Hard Rock sound by combining elements of Electronica with heavy guitar riffs, soulful vocals and socially conscious lyrics.
RTR vocalist Freedom Bremner, added to the lineup in 2001, has worked with Moby, singing lead on “At least we tried,” which can be found on Moby’s CD “18." Freedom was also a finalist on CBS Television's "StarSearch", where he electrified the nation with his soulful renditions of Sting's "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" and The Doobie Brothers "Long Train Running."
Before forming RTR, Aki and Howard led a band that was featured on the cable TV show “Farmclub” and were also Discmakers Independent Music World Series East Coast Regional Finalists. Howard also worked on Living Colour vocalist Corey Glover’s solo CD release entitled “Hymns”, co-writing and playing drums on several songs. Additionally, Howard was profiled in the June 2003 edition of Modern Drummer magazine where they referred to the “RTR” drum tracks as “dynamic” and “demonstrating speed, facility and creative energy.”
While some bands like Incubus and Deftones have experimented with Jungle, Drum and Bass, Breakbeat, Techno and other electronic forms in their sound, not many have taken it to the level of The Radical Thought Resistance. “A lot of what you hear nowadays is cut and paste” states RTR guitarist Aki. “We want to show that with decent musicianship you can play this style we call ‘Jungle Metal’ organically.” Drummer Howard adds, “I listen to a lot of different styles of music and Electronica, especially Drum and Bass, has influenced me a great deal”.
RTR has been making a name for themselves in NYC where audiences are not only impressed by their live show but most importantly their songs. With thought provoking lyrics, a ground breaking approach in style and energetic live shows, RTR is a fresh approach to hard rock in today’s music landscape. Their debut EP CD entitled “Empowered Species” was released in July 2002 and a new CD tentatively entitled “Notes from the Underground” is set for release in October 2003.
Ever wonder what RTR is really singing about? Here is a brief song by song synopsis...
Rising Sun is about freeing yourself from all forms of bondage, be it physical, psychological or emotional and living your life to the fullest. It is about the individual controlling his or her destiny and not allowing life and/or circumstances to hold you back.
On September 11, 2001 our world was forever changed. While I didn't personally lose any friends or family in the WTC attacks, I am a native New Yorker and witnessing the destruction firsthand was a humbling experience. Our New Reality documents the experience of the attacks and poses several questions. Did we know about or have forewarning of the attacks? What are the consequences of the event on our civil liberties? What is the future of US foreign policy? Is it arrogance or acceptance?
Over the past century our society has advanced at an unprecedented rate. All of our technological, industrial and societal pursuits though may be coming at a severe price. Methods of Modern Madness makes the correlation between our quest for advancement, the speed at which it has occurred and the rise of mental and social disorders.
Maybe is simply a song of hope and universal love.
Originally not intended to be set to music, (Fear Not) The Void is a poem regarding human suffering, acceptance, release and ultimately, renewal and growth.
I
nspired by the movie The Matrix, Living A Lie questions how much of what we see and hear is the truth. Do we live in a society and world graced with free will or are there forces behind the scenes that manipulate our actions in subtle ways for their benefit?
