The New York City based “Alt Pop/Rock” band Soul What was formed in 1999 by Lucas Penido (vocals), and high school friends Leo Neves (bass), “Ace” (lead guitar), and Jay Martin (rhythm guitar). Shortly after the band’s formation, Danny Spaight joined on drums and Sean McKenna on rhythm guitar.
Within less than half a year, Soul What had released their first independent album entitled “The Trip,” which has sold more than 20,000 copies to date. In addition to this the band was regularly playing clubs in the NYC circuit. By mid 2000 Soul What had performed as opening acts for bands such as 3 Doors Down, Third Eye Blind, Vertical Horizon, Splender, Eve 6, Marvelous 3, and many others.
Luke, the lead singer, has the ability to fluently speak and sing in three languages (English, Portuguese and Spanish), which also gives the band the opportunity to appeal to a larger audience.
Since their first appearance on a stage, Soul What has totally proved their existence in the music scene! Appearing in a hand full of TV programs, holding the #1 spot on the “Musictv.com” chart, as the best Band in NYC, for more than 10 weeks and receiving great reviews from the press , such as “The Village voice”; who called the band “The next U2” there is no doubt that Soul What has everything it takes to show why they are one of today’s hottest new bands!!!
