From the web-site...
Inspired by the paisley underground of the early '80's,
Enemies of the Oyster take the hook-laden melodic appeal of
early R.E.M. and Bob Mould, mix it with the energy of the
Afghan Whigs and Swervedriver, and come up with a sound
that is all their own. The band has been busy working the New
Jersey and New York club scenes, writing material, and
recording in their own studio all in the span of just over a
year...and what a difference a year makes....
Armed with just eight original songs, Enemies of the Oyster
played their first public show in the summer of 1999 to a
crowd mainly consisting of friends--it went over much better
than anticipated. The band was asked on the spot to record a
song for "'The Underground" magazine's upcoming CD
compilation, which resulted in their first experiments with
self-recording and their first single "Five Point One," released
in the early fall.
By November, Enemies of the Oyster found themselves
playing to a sold-out crowd at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ
supporting college radio favorites The Connells, and earning
themselves a steadily increasing fanbase. Winter and the
coming of the new year brought more pleasant surprises to the
band--January found them playing with the likes of Don
Fleming and Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens, and doing their
first live cybercast. The spring produced more live shows,
more of an enthusiastic following, and the birth of several new
songs.
As for the summer of 2000, it was spent recording their first
CD, presently titled "Colored."
What surprises the second year in the history of Enemies of
the Oyster will bring has as much to do with whoever is
reading this as the band themselves...so download one of the
songs, then if you like, order their cd and let them know what
you think.
