Singer Ashley Cox Decides
To Take Manhattan
Ashley Cox has nowhere to go but the Big Apple. With a reputation as a powerful singer and superior songwriter already established in Central New York, she had no choice but to leave her hometown. Fans there will miss her, but they know what she had to accept: Stardom will not find you in Syracuse.
She probably deserves stardom, too, especially if it should be given to artists who truly bare their souls. Cox brings her aspirations and heartfelt brand of girl power to a few of New York’s notable nightspots, with the Elbow Room, CBGB’s Galleria, and the Bitter End all playing host to Cox in the next few weeks:
Wednesday, June 25, 9 p.m. at The Elbow Room, 144 Bleeker St., 212-786-4055.
Sunday, July 6, 8 p.m. at CBGB’s, 313 Bowery St., 212-677-0455.
Sunday, July 20, 8:30 p.m. at the Bitter End, 147 Bleeker St., 212-673-7030.
Some compare her work to Ani Di Franco, Tori Amos, Alanis Morissette or a Ritalin-free Bjork, but none of those really hit the bull. In fairness to the comparisons, she is also far more likely to please critics than a football team, frat party or crew that rolls on 25” inch rims. Her audience usually includes a sizeable number of women, too, smattered with boyfriends in tow and a few hopeful guys working the sensitivity angle.
With no disrespect to the aforementioned divas of gal-ternative rock, Ashley does her own thing. And she does it on her own label, Ladybug Records. Cox shares stories and reflections through song, taking on love and longing to the tune of plaintive piano, ethereal synthesizers, acoustic guitar and even a little bubbling electronica.
While she’s toured the coffeehouse circuit, Cox is more serious these days than campy or peppy fare that sometimes frequents the java scene. Her work, though cerebral, never falls into the pitfalls of pretentiousness, either. These are honest songs from an honest artist, one willing to move to Manhattan just to be heard.
New Yorkers have an opportunity to hear her and judge for themselves at the upcoming shows in Manhattan or via a download at her Web site, www.ashleycoxmusic.com. The site also has her bio, catalog of recordings, photos and the rest of her summer itinerary.

Born and Raised in Syracuse, NY, Ashley Cox is a diminutive powder-keg who lives life like she's about to explode with positive energy. A singer, songwriter and ultra talented musician on both guitar and piano, Ashley Cox delivers passionate music that, at times, flows like a raindrop, other times like a tidal wave, but always immerses her listeners in absolute honesty and intensity.
Ashley has toured with talents like MeShell Ndegeocello and recorded with the Fun Lovin Criminals. She's even worked with Russ Titleman, who produced Eric Clapton's Grammy award winning Unplugged CD. In 1997, she won the Syracuse Area Music Award (or SAMMY) for Best New Artist. The last few years have found Ashley touring coffee shops, clubs and festivals all over the eastern and mid-western United States. She has organized women's showcases in locations that vary from Upstate New York, to Wilmington, North Carolina. Ashley also continues to support the local music scene by giving emerging musicians a forum for their music.
In the spring of 2000, Ashley launched her much anticipated, and well received, debut CD, As Above, So Below. The disc showcases the many sides of Ashley music and personality that covers folk, pop and alternative styles to name a few. In addition to releasing her debut CD, she started her own label, Ladybug Records.
Her endearing spirit, and a smile that can melt ice, have given her access into people's hearts and souls and leave the listener better for having heard her.
